A short testimonial of what it means to me to be a Killam Scholar:

I am honoured to be the recipients of the Honorary Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship and Dorothy J Killam Memorial Graduate Prize. I am so pleased to have been selected for these awards. Beside its financial issue, I have to admit that the Killam scholarships are considered highly prestigious name among academic environment in Canada and around the world. Receiving this fellowship means a lot to me since I can see many great names among the previous winners of this award, and it is really a great honour for me to be a Killam recipient. I would regard this scholarship as a great honour, which would bring with it an obligation for hard work and a commitment to concentrate my efforts upon the successful completion of my research to improve the lives of all Canadians. Thank you again for honouring me with this award.

How Killam funding has benefited me:

This award helps me to continue my education at the PhD level, providing me with a secure financial support which allows me to fully concentrate on my research. Moreover, its research grant portion will help me to attend more technical seminars and conferences which will add up considerably to the quality of my research.

Why I chose the University where I am currently studying:

After several years of study and work, all in structural engineering, I decided to continue my graduate study toward a PhD in the field of structural analysis and design. Through my research into different graduate programs, I found that the Department of Structural Engineering at the University of Alberta is the best fit for me. The faculty members’ background, expertise and research interests, along with the graduate courses offered, match well with my fields of interest: non-linear engineering mechanics, dynamics and earthquake engineering. The position of this university as one of the elite graduate institutions in the North America and the status of the Structural Engineering group in particular, made this institution an ideal destination for me. In this regard, I chose the University of Alberta, to study under the supervision of Professor Driver. I turned down several offers of entrance scholarships and awards from prominent U.S. universities and Australian universities to accept the position at the University of Alberta. I believe this is the best place for me to receive a high level education under the supervision of leading-edge faculty members. In addition, its well-equipped laboratories and facilities can guarantee a learning environment in which I could produce my best. I am convinced that the excellence of this program can provide me with my best opportunity for continual learning and growth, and help me towards my final goal – to become an outstanding faculty member.
